WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates is a movement method developed more than 100 years ago by Joseph Pilates that focuses on the mind-body connection to help you strengthen your core and stretch your muscles. At Purposeful Pilates, we teach his classical method that focuses on a combination of exercises performed on various pieces of equipment. Everything that you learn in pilates translates into your everyday functional activities. You'll be more aware of how you’re moving and your posture. Our clients always comment that they stand taller, are more in tune with their core and have less aches and pains thanks to their pilates workouts. HOW OFTEN SHOULD
I DO PILATES?
The key to getting results in pilates is consistent practice. We require that you commit to doing pilates a minimum of once a week to ensure that you see and feel the results as soon as possible. Joseph Pilates said, “You will feel better in ten sessions, look better in twenty sessions, and have a completely new body in thirty sessions.”
HOW IS PILATES DIFFERENT THAN YOGA?
The equipment in pilates makes it stand apart from yoga. You get more core activation and deeper stretches thanks to the resistance in the springs on the reformer and chair. In addition, we do not hold poses in pilates. We are constantly in motion and moving from one exercise to the next.
WHAT EQUIPMENT IS USED IN PILATES?
There are several pieces of equipment that are unique to pilates, including the reformer and chair. This equipment is spring-loaded and offers resistance to help you engage your core and stretch. We also teach on the mat, which can be even more challenging than the equipment. Check out the videos below to see examples of exercises performed on the mat, reformer and chair.
